The Shippon is less than a mile from the pretty village of Ashprington and 2 miles from the historic riverside town of Totnes in the South Hams. It is perfectly situated if you are looking for a variety of activities; beautiful beaches within 25 minutes drive or moorland walks and rivers less than 12 miles away. Totnes is a very popular market town, known for its eclectic and wonderful array of independent, shops, boutiques and cafes. It has a very busy antiques and food market on both Friday and Saturday mornings throughout the year as well as great Christmas and occasional craft markets
Dartington Hall, with its beautiful walks, gardens, great cafes and river swimming is well worth a visit. We are surrounded by farmland mostly operating on organic or re-wilding principles. One of our neighbours makes an excellent cheese (Beenleigh Blue, Ticklemore Goats Cheese and Sharpham Brie/Rustics). We have permissible access to the River and its footpaths directly from the Shippon. But please always keep dogs on leads and leave gates how you find them. All the leading supermarkets will deliver an online order, plus there are a number of fab pubs and restaurants should you want to go out for meals.
Great walks
The Shippon is in lovely, peaceful surroundings and you may decide just to hang up your car keys for the duration of your stay! It’s a beautiful 40 minute walk/15 minute bike into Totnes along the River on part of the National cycle Network. Once there you will find lots of great cafes, pubs and restaurants as well as a high street that is home to fabulous independent shops.
In the other direction Sharpham Estate is home to an award winning vineyard and cheese makers. Wine and cheese tastings are definitely recommended as are the lovely lunches in the alfresco cafe overlooking the River, all within a 20 minute walk (5 minute car journey!) We are very lucky to have a great local, friendly pub serving lovely food and a huge array of refreshments! Its a 20 minute walk but very pleasant and well worth it for the Sunday roast.
